Reds are supplied by; Sourwoods, Maples, Burning Bush and Virginia Creeper. Orange appears on; Poison Ivy, Sugar Maples and others. This leaf color selection is far from being complete. As we mentioned in years past, colors get changed by; hours of sunlight, rainfall, sod minerals, temperature, elevation and micro-climate in addition to plant species.

This features hot rods and other custom collectible cars and chassis’s through 1972.  One week after “Shades of the Past” rod show is the 2011 Grand Fall Rod Run held on the strip in Pigeon Forge.  This event is scheduled September 15th-19th.  This is a huge car show with almost all day and night activities.  If you do not like cars, hot rods, etc. avoid this area for these 2 weeks.  Traffic congestion is intense, but for vehicle enthusiasts, this is a heavenly event.

Smoky Mountain real estate could be your ticket to an extended golfing season.  The beautiful mountains of East Tennessee are well known for a cornucopia of outdoor sports and activities.  Camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, white water rafting, boating, and horseback riding are just a part of the outside action that one can enjoy in this area.  However, golf is not world-renowned in this region.  It is interesting that locally, golf is a growing sport that continues to improve each year.  A lot of money has been spent in Sevier County alone on upgrading existing courses, as well as building new golf links. "Place of a Thousand Drips"

First off, don’t let some precipitation ruin your vacation in these beautiful Smoky Mountain homes.  Rain can actually enhance the Smoky Mountains experience.  How can rain enhance the trip? Read on, and explore the magic of rain in the Smokies.  What many people fail to realize, is that parts of the southern Appalachians (including the Smokies) are a temperate rain forest. The highest peaks average over 85″ of rain per year.  Wet years can produce over 8 feet of rain annually. Yes I said 8 feet! When you combine serious changes in elevation mixed with copious quantities of rain, you get the crucial ingredients for waterfalls.  If you go online, you can pull up maps to the prominent waterfalls within the Park. However, if your vacation is timed with some of our local monsoons, there are still options for you that allow you to stay dry.

Before we explore some of these rainy day adventures, some caution should be noted.  Any serious rain event (like remnants from a Gulf Coast hurricane or something similar) can put you in peril if you go driving around these mountains recklessly.  Mountain roads are difficult to build and therefore are often more narrow, steep, and hazardous than lowland highways.  These mountain road ways were many times built on the flattest topography of the area.  These frequently follow the creeks and rivers of the mountains.  Valleys or hollows become the low point where a heavy rain can turn a scenic waterway into a raging flood. So exercise caution, because even the steep inclines of mountain roads get greasy with water, mud, and leaves. 

Longtime residents of the Smokies find rainy days to be delightful. Traffic is frequently lighter because many are cocooning in their homes.  The rain in the mountains is so much more 3-dimensional. Clouds and wisps of mist hang on the mountains.  It is easy to see why native Americans called this “land of a thousand smokes”.  As the water makes its way down the mountains, “wet weather” waterways spring to life and dormant waterfalls come alive on the rock ledges of the area.  If you look carefully, you can see Meigs Falls from your car.  It lies on Little River Road, 13 miles from the Visitors Center (west) and 7 miles east of Townsend.  It is easily missed.  You can also see “Place of a Thousand Drips” which is amplified in wet weather from your car.  It lies off Roaring Fork Motor Trail at stop light # 15.

Gatlinburg properties and nearby locations in the Tennessee Smokies get a front row seat for some awesome July 4th festivities.  That is why we wanted to provide our blog readers with some early notice for this area’s fine activities that celebrate our nation’s birthday.  Gatlinburg will begin it’s 36th year for the first 4th of July parade in the country.  The parade line-up begins late on July 3rd and the parade starts on the stroke of midnight when the clock ticks over to July 4th.  There will be approximately 100,000 spectators viewing the parade participants.  The event is highly patriotic with an emphasis that honors current and past military personnel.  These individuals have served this country by risking their lives for our freedom.  The parade highlights their sacrifice.  The procession is over a mile long and has a variety of components from elaborate floats to marching bands.  More detail are available via Gatlinburg’s website. 

Another key element on the area’s July 4th celebration is Restless Heart.  They will headline at the Patriot Festival in Pigeon Forge on their 4th of July celebration.  The group had 4 gold albums and six #1 country singles in the early 1980′s  Additional flavor will be provided by The Return , a Beatles tribute band and Jimbo Whaley & Greenbrier, a local bluegrass group.  All of this entertainment is free, courtesty of the City of Pigeon Forge. 

Other area events include an Indepence Day sidewalk sale at the Beltz Outlet stores.  Downtown Gatlinburg hosts a great fireworks display downtown on July 4th at 10pm. Pigeon Forge also has a fireworks display on July 4th at Patriot Park.
